Braves' Heyward named NL Rookie of the Month

Baseball Betting Lines

05/04/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward has been selected as the National League's top rookie for the first month of the season.

The 20-year-old led all rookies with six home runs and 19 runs batted in during April and finished tied for ninth in the Majors in RBI. He hit .240 for the month and added three doubles and 13 walks and scored 10 times, while posting a .360 on-base percentage.

Heyward joined Jordan Schafer, who did it last season, as the only Braves rookies since 1981 to make their Major League debut on Opening Day.

Heyward belted a home run in his first big league at-bat, on April 5, and became the youngest player to do so since Ted Tappe of the Reds did it at the age of 19 in 1950. The Georgia native became the sixth player in Atlanta history and the 11th in franchise history to deliver a long ball in his debut.

Others considered for the award were St. Louis southpaw Jaime Garcia, who was 2-1 with a 1.04 earned run average; Cardinals infielder David Freese, who hit .324 and drove in 14 runs; Mets' left-hander Jon Niese, who was 1-1 with a 3.10 ERA and Mike Leake, who started his rookie campaign with two wins and a 3.25 ERA after bypassing the minor leagues and going directly to Cincinnati to open the season.
